Chick Tract Review: Lisa

Jack Chick sez: Pornography triggers sexual perversion.

This shameful tract is no longer in print, and isn’t even available on the Chick Publications website. However, it is included in the book Hot Topics, in which Chick and the equally insane David W. Daniels tackle six of the “hottest issues of our times,” most of which seem to involve different permutations of gay people and child molestation. And Dungeons & Dragons for some reason.

Lisa was first written and distributed back in 1984, but was quickly yanked for reasons that become painfully obvious once you actually read the damn thing.

It tells the story of Henry, an unemployed and henpecked husband with a penchant for naughty videos. Oh, and apparently he’s been repeatedly raping his young daughter Lisa for quite some time. It’s not a well kept secret. Even Henry’s neighbor Charlie knows, and promises to keep quiet if Henry will agree to “share and share alike.”

We jump ahead to two months later. Young Lisa has been diagnosed with herpes, and the doctor confronts Henry with the fact that he knows Lisa was sexually abused. And then he calls the police and has Henry arrested.

No, wait. That’s what a decent person would do. Instead, the doctor takes the opportunity to witness to Henry about Jesus.

The doctor explains that Henry isn’t responsible for his actions because “Satan is in control.” Fortunately, if Henry accepts Christ as his savior, Satan won’t be allowed to tempt him beyond what he is “able to bear.” That’s all Henry needs to hear! He drops to his knees, repents, and prays. And when he’s done, he feels clean. Hell, he’s practically glowing!

So Henry returns home and tells his wife that the most wonderful thing has happened to him.

We then find out that Henry’s wife, Linda, knew all about his molestation of their daughter. However, Linda chose to turn a blind eye because she was molested as a child by her uncle. Linda tearfully confesses that she’s been taking out her frustration on Lisa as well, and that she has “really hurt her.” Fortunately, Henry knows how to make everything better. He prays with Linda, and she invites Jesus into her life.

And then, ten minutes later, they cheerfully tell the tiny, teddy-bear-clutching Lisa that they’ve got wonderful news. “Your daddy and I will never hurt you again,” Linda says. “We love you, and Jesus does too.”

And so our story ends with poor Lisa suffering from herpes and the emotional scars of having been raped and abused by her parents (and a neighbor, who never gets mentioned again). But it’s a happy ending, because Henry and Linda have become Christians after seeing the error of their ways.

So the moral of our story is that pornography is bad. Oh, and apparently it’s okay to rape and abuse children as long as you ask Jesus into your heart when you’re done.

Fuck you, Jack Chick. Just fuck you.

  1. This comic badly needs Rorschach to turn up.

    • You mean Brick Stone?

  2. What… the…Fuck.. Haha! i agree with the poster Above (Rick) Rorschach REALLY needs to pop up in this comic! i mean seriously? he raped his child, he let his next door Neighbor rape his OWN CHILD, he gave his child herpes (or was that because he was whoring her out? i really dont know) LISA’s OWN MOTHER HATES HER (WHY?!) and because they both prayed its fine now. you know i was a christian till i was around 13-14 years old, and jesus never helped all of MY problems. i mean its retarded to even say such a thing, that if you pray and ask god to forgive you then your somehow fixed, every problem means nothing. if i could draw comics (i can draw i just suck at sequential art) id draw another panel to this comic where the cops bust in, arrest BOTH of the parents, take lisa put her in a foster home, she grows up finds a boy who loves her regardless of the herpes she was smote with due to her evil fucking father and lives happily ever after (because SOMEBODY needs to give this fucking comic a REAL happy ending!)

    • I totally agree with. This jack dude is an a**hole. I grew up believing shit like this until I was 12, and I’m never going back.
Hell, I used to yell at kids in different religions.

  3. Wooooow…what an abominable person…!

  4. We need the Punisher breaking into to break every bone of this bastard and then throw him to police into a bag! Really, what an asshole this Chick is.

  5. The really crazy thing was that the whole time, I was expecting his daughter to at least be a teenager. The final panel was a shocker.

So, according to Jack Chick, there should be no jails, except perhaps for Catholics and atheists. If you commit a crime, all you need to do is pray to Jesus, and everything is OK. Why even have a court system?

  6. I… just wow. I knew Chick was hateful, ignorant, and generally insane. But this is just reprehensible. There’s not even anything to laugh about here; it just makes me feel nauseous, and a little dead on the inside. I need a shower.

  7. As someone who was sexually abused for 8 years by her stepfather, I just want to say that this tract is one of THE most fucked up things I’ve ever seen. I was raised as a Christian til I was 14…then I turned to Wicca, and have never looked back.

Let’s see, a religion that (while new) teaches that there is no Lucifer, that you are responsible for your words/actions, and that trying your best to “Harm None” is a good way to live one’s life?

Or one that relies on a 2,000 year old book that says you can basically be an intolerant, hateful, clinic burning, gay hating, pedophile rapist your entire life…but as long as you accept Jesus as “the one true way” before you die, you’re perfectly fine?

I may have to deal with people thinking I’m a lost, devil worshipping hippie feminist (yeah, right) but I feel even worse for REAL Christians who have people like Todd Atkin, Pat Robertson and Jack Chick to “speak for them”.

  8. Well, this is genuinely evil. The tract I mean, not your blog, which is a public service.

  9. Reblogged this on Leaving Fundamentalism and commented:
Fundamentalism is not always just wrong. Sometimes, it’s also evil. This blog is worth following. Also, Chick Tracts have a litigious reputation, so I suspect some of these posts may not be online forever.

  10. Reblogged this on Life Is Anything That Dies When You Stomp On It. and commented:
Just completely wrong and disgusting. Forget about protecting the child, the first priority is making sure the rapist is going to heaven.

This is why Christianity is mocked.

    • By coincidence,I work with a guy who’s an ordained minister and a convicted pedophile!!
      Interesting World,Huh?

  11. I always found chic tracts most stimulating coming from a conservative holiness background.
It achieved two things in my adolescent mind. It allowed me to read comics . (Which were taboo) and it awakened deviant sexual thoughts I had never had.
Thank you chic for making this contradiction possible by stirring in a little Jesus.

  12. Wait, where is that thing Jesus said about how those who lead children astray would be better off with millstones around their necks?

Or that thing somewhere in the book of Matthew about adulterers and perverts burning in a lake of fire?

So basically, since the guy was already going to hell anyway, he might as well be hanged for a sheep as a lamb, right? Or maybe now that he’s accepted Jesus, child molestation is okay. It’s scary how many people really do end up believing things like that.

  13. Um… OK. Chick is a bad storyteller. His tales have holes in them and they are completely retarded. But the story is not finished. Obviously. Chick isn’t saying rape and child abuse are okay. He’s trying to tell a story in his own retarded way. He’s saying that no matter what you’re in Jesus is willing to forgive, so yeah I am a Christian, and I can agree these comics are very stupid. But any person with a mental capability over that of a rock can clearly see he is not advocating anything but his own beliefs.

    • Oh hogwash. I believe what you are trying to say is that Chick is not advocating going out and committing child rape. Well, no, he’s not saying “go out and rape!” but rather something much, much more insidious: that if you have done or are doing something so atrocious, the only accountability you have is to God. The only thing you have to do to remedy the situation is pray for 10 minutes. It’s not your fault; Satan made you do it. You will suddenly be able to bear your sexual urges toward children because Jesus. And that is total nonsense. This is not just bad (“retarded”) storytelling; it’s intended to give people an excuse for their behavior and totally ignores the reality that this kind of pathology must be treated by professionals (probably, ideally, via chemical castration) and addressed by the “worldy” criminal justice system.

Moreover, you can see some very disturbing and telling things about the way Chick’s mind works so sickly (making him quite the bad candidate to be lecturing anyone about morality and ethics). He throws in the neighbor for a gratuitous gang rape that doesn’t contribute anything whatsoever to the story. He thinks it’s okay to call out a repeatedly traumatized kid and tell her, “Everything’s okay now! Won’t be raping you anymore because I’m saved!” as though that is in any way healthy for the child. He has the father basically blame his wife and pornography for his behavior. And what is probably the most ironic part of this atrocious tract is that I believe it would have the opposite-of-intended effect on any rational, thinking person: if this is what Christianity comes down to – if I can do something so terrible as rape my young kid repeatedly and “fix” it all (for myself at least) by praying for a couple minutes – then I want nothing to do with it.

    • His own beliefs are F’d-up. That’s the point.

And, well, it’s not hard to see where he drew those beliefs from. A literal interpretation of Christianity indicates that you can do anything and still get into Heaven, as long as you accept Jesus. The Bible alone doesn’t give any hint that there are some actions which are irredeemable—you need to use human judgement for that.

    • Jonathon, Very true!

  14. Oh wow. I remember this one because it really messed with my head — more so than the others. My mother was attending a crazy pentecostal church and my father was sexually abusing me. I was 13 when this was published. She brought it home and I was convinced that my father just needed to find Jesus and all would be ok. So simple, right?

Reading it through middle-aged eyes and after years of therapy is a trip. What a fucked up pamphlet. I wonder how many other abused kids read this and didn’t realize they had a right to have their abuse recognized and their traumas addressed because none of that occurs in the story. It just reinforced all the other negative messages I was receiving about myself. Uh, thanks, Chick.

    • Adulthood Rules, I agree with you! I think the Duggar family is in severe denial about Josh finding Jesus and not molesting anymore. I fear for his 2 daughters, Mackynzie and Meredith because he molested their aunts and what is to stop him? It’s hard to rehabilitate a child molester from what I heard! Jack Chick certainly did you and other abused kids no favors!

  15. […] I swear I’m not making that last one up. […]

  16. So many of Chick’s tracts seem to give the message that you can be a rapist, child molester, murderer or any other criminal under the sun, or even sell your soul to the Devil – but you will go to Heaven if you just accept Jesus. Meanwhile, being a Catholic, Jehovah’s Witness, Freemason, reading Harry Potter, having a non-Christian religion, playing Dungeons & Dragons, or believing in evolution seem to be the real crimes in Jack Chick’s booklets and are surefire ways to Hell.

This pamphlet is one of the worst offenders if not THE worst. And it is a strong contender for the title because Jack Chick himself withdrew it. It must take a heck of a lot for a man like that to withdraw anything he prints.

  17. I don’t really care what you people think about Chick, I liked reading them even before I accepted Jesus after reading the Bible for myself. You people are blinded in your hate and what some evil people have done to you. No one says be a child molester! No one says non repentant and unborn again child molesters are saved. A truly born again person is a new person, not the old one with religion which doesn’t save. Sinners do evil and Jesus came to save sinners. God is not evil, mankind and Satan and his fallen angels are evil. If God destroyed evil we would not have free choice and we would all be destroyed without hope. God did not create evil, He knew it would come from free choice and made a provision for those who wanted it, not all do or believe but that’s not Gods fault. But I say, and the Bible says, that a child molester or an Adolph Hitler can be saved IF they repent and believe Jesus will save them. Jesus did NOT say you could be “sorry” but keep molesting or some other sin. He said go and sin no more. He said if your member offended you cut it off, it would be better than entering Hell with it! The important question is not about Jack Chick or me or anybody else, but about you. Are YOU saved or lost?

  18. Saying your sorry isn’t enough. That guy can get all his forgiveness from God and repent. But he still should gone to jail or got the death pentaly. But God forgives us, and He doesn’t punish us after that. That because is punishment is death. Not this eternal hell thing. No one one
is burning in hell yet. They will burn and be destroy in the future, both the body and the soul will destroy. Eternal fire had been mistranslated. It’s suppose to be everlasting fire. How long will it go as long as He want to. The bible said 1 day equal a 1,000 years to Him. Well here are some thing that explains it better. Sorry I am able to make a click links.

  19. Oh never mind. Forget about what I said about making the link unclickable. If only some other website did that.

  20. Having read this tract and seeing the mess that was the Duggar scandal, among other things, this explains quite a lot.

  21. Don’t forget, in another Chick comic we learned that the person who is raped needs to forgive their rapist/s rather than seeking legal action.

  22. […] isn’t the even worst tract Chick has written. “Lisa” is the title of horrifying tale every secularist fears. While the tale is certainly […]

  23. This is the most disturbing thing I’ve ever read. It doesn’t matter if you promise to “never hurt her again,” your little girl still has herpes because of you, and the emotional trauma, that’s not just going to go away because you prayed to Jesus and promised to stop…sorry Christians but that’s not enough in the real world.

She’s still being forced to live with the man who molested her and invited the neighbor to come join him…the only right thing to do here would be calling CPS and getting that child put in another home and the father arrested and jailed for the rest of his miserable life.

If you ask me, the most sickening thing about this comic isn’t just the fact that the father didn’t get put in jail, but the fact that he’s allowed to keep custody of his daughter. And this is portrayed as okay, good, even, because he’s a Christian now.

I don’t care if you promise to “never hurt her again,” (as many abusers do before abusing again) and I don’t care if you’ve had a religious epiphany since the deed, leaving a child in the custody of a known child rapist is NEVER okay.

What’s even more effed up is that if the father had gotten his own daughter pregnant, Chick would make a comic portraying the victim as a heartless murderer for wanting to get an abortion.

It’s no surprise to me that this man is a recluse. He has no idea how anything works outside of his Christian bubble. What he published here is reprehensible; he may not be saying child abuse is okay directly, but he’s condoning forcing child abuse victims to stay with their abusers as long as they apologize.

  24. It should be noted that ~good Christian doctor~ actually committed a crime, in many states, doctors have a legal obligation to report suspected child abuse to the police, not simply preach to them then send them back home to their abuse victim.

  25. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW. This may be one of the worst things Chick has ever written. Thank you for posting this if only to let people know how bad he can be. I can feel nothing more than pity for those who suffered abuse from their parents who were handed this tract and rage at Jack Chick for writing (and presumably illustrating), let alone printing and publishing it.

  26. Check out the song “Lisa’s Father” by the band Alice Donut. The song satirizes this comic book without holding any punches. Very dark and interesting. 🙂

  27. So I watch The Bible Reloaded on YouTube, an atheist YouTube channel that loves to riff on Chick tracts (among other things). People have asked them to do this tract and they’ve absolutely REFUSED to read this one.

After reading this, I can now see why. Just…WTF is this?!?

  28. Um…wow. So I watch this YouTube channel called The Bible Reloaded, where two guys riff on Chick Tracts (among other Bible-related things). People have asked them to read this one, and they’ve absolutely REFUSED to read it!

And after reading this, I can see why! WTF is this?!?

  29. this was used as the basis for alice donuts song “lisas father” … basically just tells the story of someone coming to his door and giving him the comic and then he tells the story in it …with a few additions … especially at the end when her parents say they arnt going to hurt her any more….. ” …. and lisa says …..lisa says ……….”oh really”” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=092DUlx2hX0

  30. To the people saying that Rorschach, the Punisher, or someone along those lines needs to visit Lisa’s parents: Antiheroes are too soft. You’d want someone like Loki, the Joker, or ideally Jack Slash for this kind of monster.

  31. On a positive note, it was the inspiration for this wondrous nugget of punk rock genius….

  32. that’s some sick shit here….
Now, I had a girlfriend that I found out many years later suffered abuse from her father. For some reason the putz liked me. Makes me sick to think about it. She now derives a great deal of solace from her church. I won’t deny her that, But no one can tell me that praying it away makes everything ok.

  33. And how exactly is hell pitch black with all the flames?
My mother was molested by her father for 12 years. Her mother ignored it. I would like to picture them burning in hell for sure.

  34. NEXT TO THE KING JAMES HOLY BIBLE, CHICK TRACTS ARE THE MOST READ BOOKS-/-BOOKLETS-/-TRACTS ON A DAILY & CONTINUAL BASIS BY THE ENGLISH READING, SPEAKING, WRITING &-OR COMMUNICATING PEOPLES OF THE WORLD ! ! !

    GO TOP THAT & MAYBE I’LL READ YOUR SMUT AGAINST J.T.C. ! ! !

  35. I don’t know where to start with this. My wife and I are both Christians. We grew up with the same basic theology espoused in this “publication.”
My wife was actually sexually molested by her great uncle who lived at home with his mother (wife’s grandma). Grandma watched my wife as during her preschool and early grade school years, during that time her pervert of an uncle would have her suck him off and probably worse (she can hardly stand to talk about it). To this day she never told her parents and her abuser died when she was in high school. The author of this blog post is right to say that the doctor should have reported the abuse. BUT the author is wrong about Christianity (or at least evangelical Christian theology); each person is absolutely responsible for his or her actions regardless of what they believe about Jesus.
Jesus says that a bad tree cannot produce good fruit and that a good tree can’t produce bad fruit. Here, trees are a metaphor for people. The idea is that even objectively good actions from unbelievers aren’t enough to make up for their bad actions and that authentic believers will not fail to be faithful to God. It is true that Christianity teaches that God doesn’t hold the sins that were committed before conversion against us; however, that only concerns an individual’s standing with God. Sin – especially sexual sin – has consequences. Faith is not a get out of jail free card, we still have to face the consequences of our actions. The Bible teaches that laws and government were instituted by God; Henry and his neighbor (and an argument could be made for including Linda too) should be in jail. Maybe while Henry is there he can show other convicts the error of their ways…

My point is don’t reject the faith because of an ignorant or misguided believer. No true Christian condones this kind of behavior and most now understand the harm in turning a blind eye (which is usually an earnest but misguided application of the Christian principle of forgiveness). If any sliver of truth can be salvaged here it is this: Know Jesus and you will know peace; where there is no Jesus, there is no peace.

  36. So the courts are expected to believe that child molesters aren’t responsible for their actions because Satan’s in control, and should therefore acquit them?

  37. This is fucked up big time. Rape your little
girl, hand her over to your fucked up deranged neighbor , pray a little prayer and everything’s OK. No prosecution – no prison. . By the way the doctor had a legal obligation to report the two bastards. Everything is OK if you say a little prayer. Fuck that.

    • That Lisa tract is an insult to sex abuse victims all right. Ok, so Chick withdrew and disowned it, but the damage is done because everyone remembers it and why it is his worst tract ever.

  38. Jack Chick is the Garry Trudeau of assholes. Nobody doesn’t get it like Jack Chick doesn’t get it. I have a collection of his tracts. If there was a god, Jack would be an embarrassment to him.

    • I doubt any new stuff Chick puts out would have anything new in it except a new slant on his same old garbage.

  39. Christ himself would be the first to tell Chick to GTFO.

    • It would be interesting to know the first thing Jack Chick saw after he passed on.

  40. How’d you like Chick’s idea that it was the wife’s fault for the husbandd raping the daughter?

    • Always the woman’s fault for rape, domestic abuse or incest. Have you noticed that the myths for all three are very similar?

  41. As a christian, that comic is disgusting.

  42. Zoe, As a Christian, all of Chick’s tracts are disgusting. The major problem with them is the abject dishonesty.

    • It seems that according to Jack Chick, you can get away with murder (or in this case, child molesting) if you accept Christ. But if you don’t accept Chick’s interpretation of Christianity, worship a non-Christian faith, be a law-abiding citizen but don’t accept Christ or, worst of all, are a Catholic, then you are on a one-way ticket to Hell.

    • Jack Chick demonstrates over and over again that he doesn’t really know what he’s talking about. Take “Big Daddy” for example, where a student “proves” the evolution theory is “full of holes”. Proves Chick’s grasp of the theory is full of holes more like.

Chick also makes scapegoats for all the ills in society: pornography for child molesting; Dungeons & Dragons, Wicca and Harry Potter for Satanism; and Catholicism for everything bad in history, from the Holocaust to the Russian Revolution.

  43. Henry isn’t responsible for his actions because Satan is in control. Yeah, I can just see his lawyer running that as a defence in court. And the jury accepting it and finding Henry not guilty on the grounds of diminished responsibility due to Satan being in control.
